Birds Bakery in Ashby is to open on Sundays - starting later this month.

The company - with branches across the East Midlands - says the change is part of Birds' ongoing commitment to providing greater convenience for customers.

It adds it has recognised the importance of weekends for 'family time and indulgence', which means the bakery has extended its opening hours to include Sunday.

The first Sunday opening in Ashby will be on September 15.

Birds says the development has also led to the creation of over 70 additional jobs across the stores, bakery, and dispatch operations.

Jamie Bird, Director of Strategy at Birds, said: "We're thrilled to be opening our bakery doors on Sundays to provide our customers with even more opportunities to enjoy our products.

"With more shops extending their trading hours to include Sundays, we wanted to ensure our customers can shop with us if they are out and about.

"Our hope is that by being open every day of the week, we can contribute to making the high street a vibrant and bustling place once again.

Birds Bakery has been a fixture in Ashby town centre for over 50 years - and, earlier this year, moved to new premises in Market Street, that had previously been occupied by Specsavers.

With the new extended schedule, freshly baked bread, pastries, and treats will now be available every day of the week.

Birds Bakery has 61 stores across the East Midlands, and many of its products can be ordered online, delivered to customers' homes, using the Birds By Post service
