Police urge football fans to plan ahead as almost 150 drink drive arrests during World Cup

Leicestershire Police is urging football fans to plan their journey home ahead of this evening's England match (15 July), after almost 150 motorists have already been arrested during the Force's summer campaign.
Officers want to highlight the continued risk caused by drivers getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or taking drugs, with enforcement activity continuing across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Since the launch of the campaign, 148 people have been arrested, including 108 on suspicion of drink driving, 27 on suspected drug driving and 13 for refusing to provide a sample.
Of the arrests made, 16 were made in North West Leicestershire and more than a quarter of all arrests followed road traffic collisions.
So far, 22 motorists have been arrested between 5am and midday, making the Police keen to emphasise that you can still be over the legal limit the morning after drinking, especially with the late kick off times this year.
Chief Inspector Jodie White, of Leicestershire Police's Specialist Support Department, said: 'As fans gather this evening to watch England's match, we're encouraging everyone to think about how they'll get home before kick-off.
'Supporting your team should be enjoyable, but if you've been drinking alcohol or taking drugs, don't take the risk of driving. Plan ahead by arranging a lift with a sober driver, booking a taxi, using public transport or staying overnight.
'Nearly 150 arrests during this campaign show that too many people are still making dangerous decisions behind the wheel. Our officers will continue carrying out proactive patrols and enforcement activity to identify and deal with drink and drug drivers, helping keep our roads safe for everyone.'
