A new electric vehicle charging point area has been planned for a filling station site in Ashby.
The St Alban's-based Motor Fuel Group has applied to site five points at Ashby Service Station in Nottingham Road, which is close to Aldi and The Flooring Company and 500 metres from the junction with the A42.
In a covering letter to North West Leicestershire District Council planners, Motor Fuel Group says there are only 25,000 charging in the UK at the moment, and that at least 280,000 will be needed by 2030.
It adds that its proposals for the Ashby site would take the form of five points in a substation enclosure.
The company says the uneven distribution of charging points across the UK is hindering the sale of electric vehicles.
Motor Fuel Group says it hopes to provide access to affordable and convenient charging, no matter where people live.
It adds that rapid charging areas for longer journeys are becoming increasingly important.
The applicant says that the application should be considered favourably by the council in terms of the national context and demand for such points.
Also, the company says the facility would enhance what is already on offer at the site which has fuel pumps, a convenience store, a cashpoint and provides a car valeting service.
North West Leicesteshire District Council is currently considering the plans.
The council already has charging points at the North Street car park in Ashby.
