The Friends of Ashby Bath Grounds group has signalled a key development in the purchase of the historic green space.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council will debate the issue on Monday and decide whether it can go ahead with its planned purchase of the Bath Grounds.

The matter will be raised publicly at an important time with the revised plans for the development of the adjoining Royal Hotel site submitted to North West Leicestershire District Council last week.

Last November, the Town Council said it hoped to complete the purchase of the Bath Grounds in the early part of this year.

The Friends of the Bath Grounds says: "It looks as if the Bath Grounds are, at last, going to become publicly owned, one of the Friends' major objectives.

"We're very pleased to see that Ashby Town Council will finally be deciding on Monday, January 24, whether to go ahead with the purchase of the Bath Grounds.

"A set of agreements will be debated which will effectively separate the Bath Grounds purchase from the planning application for development around the Royal Hotel.

"The money paid will have to be used by the Royal owners to undertake major repairs to the fabric of the building, particularly the roof, whether or not their planning application for apartments and an old people's home is approved."

The meeting takes place at Legion House on South Street at 6.30pm on Monday.
