Packington Musicians Come Together As Village Bursts Into Song To Form A Community Choir

Packington is set to echo to the sound of You'll Never Walk Alone on Thursday evening.

And it is hoped that, once the Coronavirus lockdown is eased, the village will have its own community choir.

Packington resident Aimee Harrison has long had a vision of bringing musically-minded local people together.

But, ironically, it has taken a situation where the public are being urged to keep apart to make it happen.

Like the rest of the country, Packington residents have been out on their doorsteps on Clap for our Carers night each Thursday to pay tribute to the NHS.

But last week, a group of people gathered in the High Street to give a rendition of Lean on Me - click on the video link above to see it.

All of the musicians kept a safe distance apart and now Aimee hopes it will become a regular event - carrying on after the restrictions have been lifted.

She has set up a Packington Community Choir Facebook page Packington Sings and tonight (Thursday) a rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone has been planned.

It is a fitting choice as it is the No1 record at the moment sung by Michael Ball and Captain Tom Moore who has just turned 100.

Aimee told Ashby Nub News about the Packington musicians came together.

"Last Thursday was our first foray into it, I've been in the village three years now and have a background in singing and teaching," said Aimee.

"I've been thinking about starting up a local community choir. And with the musicians in the village, we've had people playing after the Clap for our Carers in the village.

"A friend suggested we do a distance community thing and our first one was last week.

"The idea was that, over the week, I would post a video which features a new song and people, as they wish, can come out of their houses and listen. Or they could join in a singalong

"It went really really well last week. Nick and Joy Gravestock are both musicians and they'd been playing Somewhere Over The Rainbow after the Clap for our Carers.

"So what we've done is gone off the back of that, to lead a community sing.

"Last week a lady who plays the saxophone come and join us.

"I didn't know until then we had a saxophonist in the village.

"We tried to link some other people at the bottom of the village by telephone to see if they wanted to come out and it was lovely, we had about 30 people joining in.

"People were playing various instruments at points along High Street. Several families in the outlying streets came up and walked up to where we were just to listen or to join in."

Aimee then decided to organise it and get people rehearsing.

She added: "The hope is that every week I will post a new song.

"And the idea is that when this is all over, we will have inspired people to come together and enjoy singing

"I used to lead Huddersfield People's choir, many years ago when I lived up there.

"It's something I've wanted to do now for some time, but the moment has never arisen.

"But then we thought what a great way to get the community together… but not! At a safe distance of course.

"We want to people to come together and share a love of music and song, so hopefully when this is all over, people want to join us and start something regularly.

"I've hastily put together the Packington community choir Facebook page.

"And I will continue to post a song a week. Last week's was Lean On Me, and this week it's You'll Never Walk Alone as it's the No1. Somebody suggested it and I thought: 'Why not?'

"We've definitely found people in the village who can play musical instruments as a result of this.

"It's lovely to bring the musicians together in a really unique way. I'm hoping it builds and grows, but even if nothing comes of it then for these few weeks it will have done what we wanted it to do, bring people together."
