New speed limit to be put in place on major Ashby route when work begins on 605-home housing estate

By Graham Hill 28th Jan 2022

The Ashby by-pass is to become a 40mph zone while an access road for the new Money Hill housing estate is being built.

Leicestershire County Council Highways say the speed limit is being introduced in the interests of road safety.

A new roundabout is being constructed to provide the new road which will be designed to carry works traffic during the building of the estate.

But the speed limit will stretch for virtually the entire length of the Ashby by-pass - from Heath Lane in Boundary to the Nottingham Road roundabout.

Delays were promised last year as the start of the new 605-home development drew closer.

We reported in November that the work could last from February until October - but was only initially expected to cause delays up to the Smisby Road roundabout.

Now that appears to have been extended to the Boundary junction.

The County Council has announced the new speed limit and said: "The council hereby gives notice that it proposes to impose a 40 mph Speed Limit on A511 from the junction of Heath Lane to the roundabout junction of Nottingham Road including the roundabout bypass slip road and the roundabout of new access road approximately 1003 metres north-west of its roundabout junction of Nottingham road.

"On behalf of the developer Bloor Homes/Taylor Wimpey Group, it is necessary to reduce part of the existing national speed limit and introduce a 40mph speed limit extension.

"This is to facilitate construction of a new roundabout.

"The proposed 40mph speed limit extension is intended to improve safety for access and egress at and on the new roundabout and provide a safe highway environment."
