Leicestershire's Police and Crime Commissioner has announced new, enhanced police patrols will be introduced in market towns across the county, including Ashby and Melton.

Rupert Matthews, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland that recently defected to Reform UK, says this move is delivering on key commitments he had made to residents, businesses and local communities.

The additional police patrols will be in place by December in Ashby, Coalville, Market Harborough, Loughborough, Hinckley and Melton Mowbray, with a focus on persistent concerns about anti-social behaviour and shoplifting.

Leicestershire Police also hope that these new patrols will improve police visibility, making town centres feel safer and more welcoming for residents, businesses and visitors.

'Visible policing plays a vital role in preventing crime and antisocial behaviour before it takes hold,' said Matthews. 'Strong police presence helps build confidence, reassures communities and supports thriving town centres.

'I am particularly pleased that this initiative will be up and running before Christmas, providing additional reassurance to residents and valuable support to retailers during one of the busiest times of the year.'
