A motion calling for Andrew Bridgen to resign as a MP for North West Leicestershire is due to be presented to councillors next month.

Labour councillor Sean Sheahan has put forward the motion to be heard at North West Leicestershire District Council's full council meeting on September 5.

The North West Leicestershire Labour Group leader describes Mr Bridgen's current position as 'an affront to democracy' and leaves the people of the constituency 'at a real disadvantage'.

Mr Bridgen was expelled from the Conservative Party earlier this year following remarks made on social media criticising the Government's Covid vaccine rollout.

That followed having the Parliamentary whip removed when he compared the Covid vaccine to the Holocaust in a post on Twitter.

Mr Bridgen then joined Laurence Fox's Reclaim Party in May - but remained as an MP for the district which includes Coalville and Ashby.

There have been a number of calls from constituents for Mr Bridgen to step down, with the next General Election scheduled to be more than a year away.

Labour's parliamentary candidate, Amanda Hack, has already called for his resignation so that a by-election can be held.

Now, Cllr Sheahan, district councillor for Measham South, will put the following motion to councillors at the September meeting.

The agenda says that councillors should consider the following motion received from Councillor S Sheahan:

It reads: "This Council calls upon Andrew Bridgen to resign as the MP for North West Leicestershire.

"Whether or not they supported Mr Bridgen in the 2019 General Election, people generally knew what they were voting for, and it was clear that Mr Bridgen won the support of the largest body of opinion in the North West Leicestershire Constituency, as measured by the votes cast.

"This was his democratic mandate, and it was that which gave him the credibility accorded an MP in the eyes of those he would be representing, those he would be making representations to and those he would be working in partnership with, such as this Council.

"However, in May of this year, Mr Bridgen joined Reclaim, turning his back on the mandate he was elected on.

"Soon after, he announced that he would not be standing down to enable a by-election to take place.

"We believe that this is an affront to democracy and places the people of North West Leicestershire at a real disadvantage, when it comes to influencing important decisions.

"Clearly we need a representative with a valid mandate who will restore credibility to the position of our Member of Parliament.

"Although he has hitherto rejected calls to resign his seat in order to trigger a by-election, we trust Mr Bridgen has had time to properly reflect on the difficulties he has placed himself and his constituents in.

"Therefore, we call on him now – don't obstruct democracy; do the right thing for the people of North West Leicestershire."

But Mr Bridgen made it clear when he joined the Reclaim Party that he fully intends to contest the next general election in North West Leicestershire.

He said in May: "I have more confidence that I will win my seat than the vast majority of sitting Conservative MPs, so I welcome the challenge should the Prime Minister and Parliamentary Party wish to take it.

"I wouldn't want to put my constituents through the rigours of having two general elections in 12 months. They don't tend to like it very much."

Critics of Mr Bridgen's views said his "misinformation" has no place in the Commons and have already demanded he submit to a by-election.

However, his views on Covid vaccines appear to have won him a new set of supporters across the world.

Responses to his social media posts have included comments such as: "The only guy in parliament that drew a line in the sand and stands proud on his hill. Thank you from thousands of us."; "Keep Going Andrew, many people are supporting you and your courageous efforts in trying to expose the truth. I wish there really was more MPs like you brave sir."; and: "There are 600+ MPs, only one is worth his salt."
