The licensee of Eden Bistro has announced the Moira-based restaurant has closed.

Eden was founded two years ago on the site once occupied by the Gilliver's shoe warehouse.

However, it drew complaints from nearby residents due to noise levels.

In February, a North West Leicestershire District Council licensing committee hearing said that Eden could no longer play music outside after 9pm.

At the meeting, the owner, Mr Charles Griffin, said he felt there was a 'personal vendetta' against him concerning the number of complaints, adding some were 'vexatious' and accusing him of using his position as a local councillor to his advantage.

Mr Griffin is also an Ashby Woulds town councillor.

But this week, he announced that Eden has ceased trading.

Ashby Nub News has contacted Mr Griffin for comment, but in a Facebook post earlier this week, he said: "As you may all be aware, Eden Bistro Limited started trading in May 2021.

"Over two years later, with considerable investment, time and dedication from staff, and much support from friends, it is with deep sadness and regret that Eden Bistro has ceased trading as of 17:00 hours on September 3, 2023.

"Today, September 4, I instructed the insolvency practitioners to dissolve Eden Bistro Ltd.

"Since opening just after lockdown, we made a surprising start, we tried our hardest, however, staff wage increases, licensing restrictions, food prices and a cut in disposable income from customers has meant Eden has struggled ever since.

"To close Eden was a last-minute decision made by us, and we tried our best to fulfil the last few customer reservations, for which I thank our staff

"You may be aware of fiduciary duties as a director, therefore it will be illegal for me to continue trading as insolvent.

"It has been a pleasure to deal with most of our customers, and we would like to thank you all for your support over the years."

Mr Griffin then said legal action would be taken over a Facebook post which was critical of the restaurant's closure.

He added: "All staff were invited to attend a meeting with ample notice, all staff were notified in a legal manner, all staff will be written to personally, all staff will be paid what is owed to them according to the employment rights act, 1996

"No matter the rumours and abuse on social media, and what this post may generate, we have acted and are acting in the best interest for all involved as directed by our advisors.

"I will finish with the statement: 'I would like to thank you all for your efforts during your time with the company, I regret that any employment should end in this way, and that Eden for the community should end in this way. Your support and loyalty has been much appreciated . May I take this opportunity to wish you the best in the future.'

"It is an easy decision to open, it's hard to close.

"Thank you and goodbye from Eden Bistro, Charles and Shirley."
