Wild animals at Twycross Zoo have been feasting on a fallen tree which came down in windy weather at Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park.

On Friday (22 May), the museum posted on Facebook that one of the trees next to the furnace had been felled by high winds and a volunteer was planning to remove it this week.

But the next day Twycross Zoo contacted the museum to ask if they could take the tree as food for some of its animals.

Tom Phillips, Moira Furnace Museum and Country Park Operations Supervisor, said: "Our friends at Twycross Zoo saw our post and got in touch.

"They asked if they could pick up the tree and use it to feed some of their animals.

"Of course we said yes!

"With the zoo not open to the public, their main revenue stream had vanished but they still need to spend thousands of pounds a week just to feed and look after the beautiful animals they care for.

"Letting them have or blown down tree is the least we could do."

The museum has shared photos of Nandi the rhino and Brad the giraffe chowing down on the tree with its Facebook followers.

"It's been great to see our site's misfortune being put to such good use.

"The trees that fall in the woodland are left as habitats for our native creatures, but trees such as the one that was blown down have to be chopped up and removed so it warms our hearts to see it being used to feed these majestic animals.

"The furnace has gone from making iron and polluting the natural world to feeding endangered animals from across the world," added Mr Phillips.
