Meet Emily Parry, our new solicitor in our dispute resolution department.
Find out what Emily did before she moved to Fishers, why Fishers and what she believes everyone should do once in their lifetime.
What will you be doing at Fishers?
I am part of the Dispute Resolution team, assisting in disputes for both individuals and companies.
Why Fishers?
Fishers is a great local firm, with a loyal client base.
What did you do before you joined Fishers?
I worked as a Dispute Resolution solicitor in Walsall/Sutton Coldfield.
Why did you choose a career in law?
I love the intricacies and the subtleties that can occur in a legal argument. Each and every day is different, and there are no two cases the same. In fact, throughout the day, I will be working on a variety of different matters, and that's what makes it exciting.
How do you spend your weekends?
I have a fiancé, young child and a Labrador. My weekends are full with time spent with the family, walks and movies.
Have you worked on any unique cases in the past?
There are two cases which really stand out. The first was when I first qualified as a solicitor. We were defending an injunction from obstructing a piece of land. It quickly turned into a claim involving unpaid licence fees, rights of way, adverse possession, judicial review, an application to Court for a Beddoes Order (to protect executors to a Will from the beneficiaries for money spent during the Claim), and eventually a negligence claim (against the other side's solicitors).
The second was an adjudication in relation to a secondary agreement to a construction contract. It was my first adjudication, and just the speed at which everything moved was so different to anything else I had experienced in litigation. From the first letter from the claimant, to the judgment, it took no longer than a couple of months. Normally litigation can last 18 months from first Letter of Claim to judgment! I learnt so much during that time, and it's an experience I will never forget.
Any advice for clients who are seeking your services?
I usually say to clients that it is best to try and resolve disputes amicably between themselves in the first instance before instructing a solicitor, so as not to create any unnecessary tension (especially in neighbour disputes). Of course, solicitors can be in the background providing you with advice on your rights. However, once you have instructed a solicitor, and me especially, I will need to know everything relevant, even if it paints you in a bad light. Only then can I assist you to the best of my ability.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
I have two locations that have equal footing. The first is Noosa in Australia. Not only is it beautiful with pristine beaches, wonderful restaurants, and sunsets that will stick in your memory, I was also proposed to on an isolated beach there. A location, and a day I will never forget.
The second is a Croatian island called Dugi Otok. A friend has a house on the island, and I have visited on several occasions. The water is clear, the food is simple, yet delicious, and there is a very welcoming atmosphere to the island. It is just a wonderful place, full of history, in which to relax and unwind.
What's something you believe everyone should do once in their lifetime?
I believe travelling is something everyone should do if they get the opportunity. And even more so, travelling to places that are not the typical "tourist" areas is a great way to experience a new country or city. Whether it be renting a house or apartment instead of a hotel, you really get a feel for the local area. In those situations, except to use my phone for maps, I find it refreshing to cut off from the constant emails, both work and personal, and to actually focus on where I am, and experiencing new things.
