A Measham couple are taking on a 500-mile Cycle for Dementia challenge to raise money for the Alzheimer's Society - as both have had a grandparent who has been suffering from the disease.

And for Kayleigh Vincent, the fundraiser is even more special as her grandfather Ron Vincent died last month after seven years in a care home with Alzheimer's and Dementia - and his funeral is today (Friday).

Kayleigh's fiancé Sean Rayne has a grandmother with the condition and she has been in a care home for six years.

The pair have a month to reach their target - cycling 250 miles each - and on Friday morning they had raised £335 of their £400 target.

Kayleigh, who is a PE teacher at Paulet High School in Burton, told Ashby Nub News about why she and Sean chose to get on their bikes.

She said: "My grandfather Ron passed away on April 29 after being in a care home since 2013.

"And Sean's nan has also been battling the same disease.

"It's my granddad's funeral on Friday but with the lockdown we're restricted with only five people allowed in.

"We'll wave him in but we can't go into the crematorium. His immediate family will be the only ones allowed in.

"That makes it even more important for us, it's nice to do something positive.

"And we decided we wanted to raise money for these causes.

"I wouldn't normally consider myself a cyclist but Sean is a keen mountain biker. We thought 'why not?, even though it's a bit out of my comfort zone.

"It means we're spending time together and it's something we're allowed to do in the lockdown.

"I put the fundraising page together on Saturday, it went live on Sunday and I was shocked by how much we'd raised. We didn't know how it would go, but it was up at £335

"We bumped the target up to £400 and we'll see how we go."

Kayleigh says one of the benefits of the challenge has been finding places on her doorstep that she barely knew were there.

She added: "We're going for about 14-16 miles and two days on, one day off.

"So far we're being positive and we're on track to get there.

"But I've lived in Measham my whole life and some of the places we've been to, I didn't even know they were there.

"There's so much around here in the National Forest. We've been down the Heritage Trail from Measham, all the way around Donisthorpe, Moira Furnace, by the canal, through Conkers and Albert Village Lake which I didn't even know existed. We've been to Hicks Lodge too."
