Measham councillor Paul Lees says the scrapping of the north eastern leg of HS2 paves the way for a new marina development.

The high speed rail line was due to pass by Measham and Ashby on its way to Leeds - then the East Midlands Parkway.

But the Government's decision to bin both that link - and the route to Manchester - means North West Leicestershire will not have to face years of development to build the line.

Now, Cllr Lees, representing Measham North on the District Council, say the original marina plans can now go ahead.

He said on social media: "Scrapping the Eastern Leg of HS2 is fantastic news for Measham and I welcome the decision by the Prime Minister.

"It is a massive relief for pretty much everyone in North West Leicestershire - and Measham in particular.

"The people of Measham have always known that the scrapping of HS2 means we can now welcome the marina development.

"It positions us with the potential to become one of the greatest places to live in the region.

"Measham can now become the even more family friendly environment which I promised you at the election.

"A water-based leisure economy creates the most wonderful environment for people to work rest and play in the village.

"People are rightly very excited - I'm very excited. Goodbye HS2 - Hello Measham Marina!

"There is still work to do to remove the protected status of the land, but I will push to get this lifted as soon as possible.

"So, as you've come to expect from me, I will just get cracking with my next piece of work to bring about my vision for Measham. I promise to stay on the ball in order to deliver this, and so my feet are on the ground.

"But yeah - I'll admit - I am working with a big grin on my face!"
