Local runners named as 2024 winners of Paul Enion Award following March's Ashby 20 event
Two local runners have been presented with the Paul Enion Award after completing the Aldi Ashby 20 last month.
The award recognises Paul's contribution towards the event as he was one of its founders in 1988.
Sadly, in 1992, Paul lost his life in an accident, while training for the World Championship Olympic distance triathlon held in Huntsville, near Toronto in Canada.
Ever since, the Ashby 20 has recognised his contribution with the Paul Enion Award, sponsored by Everyone Active, to a local male and female runner who completed the 20 mile route.
Tamsin Eastaugh and David Askew were the 2024 winners, after their names were randomly drawn by Paul's grandchildren.
They have both received a 12-month membership of Ashby Leisure Centre and Lido, courtesy of Everyone Active. The presentation was made by Operations Manager, Chris Nettel.
The event, organised by runners for runners, was established in 1988 by members of the Ivanhoe Runners.
These included Bob White, Peter Brown, Dave Mann and Kev Sanders, as well as Paul.
The first race was held on April 2, 1989, and saw over 400 runners complete the one-lap race.
Nowadays, up to 1,500 runners take part in the annual event, around a two-lap course, leaving Ashby going towards Heather.
This year's Ashby 20 men's and women's winners on the day were Jack Dakin, of Derby AC and Amy Lowe of Washlands Women Runners, who crossed the line first at the Bath Grounds.
