Leicestershire County Council to lead on coronavirus test and trace service

By Graham Hill 25th May 2020

Leicestershire County Council has been chosen by the Government to help spearhead the battle to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The county council, along with Leicester City and Rutland County councils, is one of 11 local authorities which will 'lead work and share best practice' on the new trace and test service.

The councils are now awaiting further details from the Government about the service and the role they will play.

Leicestershire County Council leader Nick Rushton said: "We see this as a very positive step forward for local people as we continue to support the fight against Covid-19.

"The work we'll engage in will give our public health officers a greater opportunity to ensure their work supports the need of our communities."

Last week, Leicestershire County Council received around £6.6m to support care home providers to tackle the spread of coronavirus.

It expects to receive additional funding to support its role in the trace and test service.
