Leader of Leicestershire County Council Leader Dan Harrison has expressed his sympathy for friends and family following the death of a 79-year-old man.

Police reported that a 79-year-old pedestrian passed away in hospital following being hit by a car in Ashby at the junction of Hill Street and Kilwardby Street.

The Police identified a silver Vauxhall Insignia that left the scene, and a 33-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released on bail.

Dan Harrison shared a statement following the man's death, saying: 'I would like to express my deepest sympathies to the family of the gentleman who passed away after being struck by a car in Ashby.

'I've asked council officers to look into the circumstances and see if any further action or investigations need to be taken at the site from a highway perspective.

'What happened last week is just awful and we'll do all that we can to find out more to reduce any potential future risks.'
