Impressive Ivanhoe Club Poppy Bottle Display Could Be Turned Into Annual Ashby Feature

The Ivanhoe Social Club's plastic bottle poppy display could become an annual event - even when coronavirus restrictions are lifted.

Last week, the Ashby venue made an appeal for empty plastic bottles that could be painted to resemble poppies.

Social club makes plea for plastic bottles to form unique display.

And now the tree outside the club has been decorated red and black ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

With no Market Street parade this year due to the Covid-10 pandemic, club steward Karen Deakin said she wanted to do something to mark the day when people are, this year, being urged to Remember From Home.

Ashby Mayor Graham Allman visited the club on Friday - and the impressive display has been growing throughout the week.

Karen told Ashby Nub News: "I don't know how many bottles we got in the end.

"There's room for more before Sunday - so next year we think it can be bigger.

"Even when Covid is over, we still think we'd like to do this next year if we can and perhaps make it an annual event. And it brightens up the corner with people stopping to admire it."

Ashby residents must Remember From Home this year.

Karen hand painted the bottles to make them look like poppies and the effect has won praise from residents.

She added: "We've been doing it a few weeks now, I've even been looking for empty bottles while I'm out walking the dog!

"They were a bit slow coming in to start with, but then you'd get a bagful and think: 'This will take a while'.

"But I was kicking myself because, during the first lockdown, the kids left so much rubbish on the Bath Grounds that I could've had those and started earlier.

"We used red aerosol for the red and painted the middles black. They look tremendous."
