There was a four-mile tailback on the A42 yesterday (Tuesday) after two incidents near Ashby and Measham.

A collision involving a lorry caused chaos - combined with a vehicle fire just a few hundred yards along the same carriageway - caused major delays.

Traffic was diverted off to the A444 junction due to the incidents.

The road the other side of the junction was opened first and the remains of the fire could still be seen.

Highways England reported 60 minute delays on the M42 from Junction 10 up to the Measham turn off "due to a multi-vehicle collision and vehicle fire."

It had earlier posted: "Traffic is held on the M42 north within J11 near Appleby Magna due to a multi-vehicle collision.

"Emergency services and traffic officers are on scene.

"There are four miles of congestion on the approach to this incident causing 45 minute delays.

"Please allow extra time for your journey."

Later, Highways England posted: "The M42 is now closed northbound within where the M42 becomes the A42 at J11 for Burton Upon Trent

"We have resources in attendance treating the carriageway surface following a multiple vehicle collision."

The lorry driver is believed to have had only minor burns and was treated at the scene.
