Gatherings of over six people in Ashby banned from Monday under tightened coronavirus restrictions

Social gatherings of more than six people in Ashby and beyond will be banned from Monday (14 Sept) - with some exceptions - under a tightening of Government coronavirus restrictions.

The move comes after a spike in infections has prompted concerns over a second wave.

From Monday in England, anyone socialising in groups larger than half a dozen will be liable to a £100 on-the-spot fine, which will double on repeat offences up to a maximum £3,200.

The limit of six people from up to six households will apply to adults and children both indoors and outdoors, in homes, gardens, parks and venues such as pubs and restaurants.

Currently, the guidance says two households of any size are allowed to meet indoors or outdoors, or up to six people from different households outdoors.

Until now the police have had no powers to stop gatherings unless they exceeded 30.

It is the first time Prime Minister Boris Johnson has imposed a nationwide lockdown measure since restrictions began to be eased in May.

There will be a limited number of exemptions including weddings, funerals, Covid-secure team sports, schools, workplaces and households or 'support bubbles' that have more than six people in them.

Mr Johnson will give further details of the changes at a Downing Street news conference at 4pm today, alongside senior advisers Professor Chris Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance.
