Police are investigating the theft of at least 30 sheep and rams from a North West Leicestershire farm.

The animals were taken sometime between Friday 21 March and Monday 23 March.

The incident took place at a farm in the Lockington area and a Leicestershire Police spokesperson said: "We are investigating the theft of more than 30 sheep and rams.

"Officers from the North West Leicestershire Neighbourhood Policing Area (NPA) have been in direct contact with the farmer and are currently liaising with both the National Farmers' Union (NFU) and colleagues in neighbouring forces, where similar incidents have been reported.

"Our officers are asking farmers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police.

"Anyone with information regarding the theft in Lockington is asked to contact PCSO Tony Gallagher on 101, quoting reference 20*163725."

North West Leicestershire Police tweeted a warning to farmers in the area, which includes farms near Ashby and Coalville, tweeted on Friday: "We are seeing an increase of rural crime, with sheep and poultry being targeted and farm shops broken into.

"We are patrolling and advising via Rural Watch and Neighbourhood alert.

"We are working with Neighbouring forces to keep all informed."
