Donisthorpe Youth Club had a huge response to their appeal for items to be taken out to Ukrainian refugees.

The collection was made as part of the Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville's mission to take supplies out to the Polish border with Ukraine next Sunday (March 13).

Donations were being accepted in Donisthorpe on Friday and organisers were delighted by the amount of items that came in.

One of the organisers, Peter Gale, said: "We collected essentials for everyday life for Ukrainians that are in need of our help.

"We became a collection point for the surrounding area.

"Businesses such as Lakeside Bistro, Eden Bistro & Bluecoat Wollaton Academy donated along with ordinary people touched by what is happening in Eastern Europe.

"People turned up in their droves dropping of essential items such as nappies, sanitary products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soaps, shampoos, batteries and food, plus blankets.

"Everything was packed and put in boxes, marked up for ease of sorting and transported to the Marlene Reid Centre in Coalville on Saturday morning.

"There was a very slick operation in Coalville which made unloading so easy, with everyone volunteering and so happy with an overwhelming desire to show their gratitude."
