Discarded cigarette causes Appleby Magna house fire: Ashby crew called out in early hours

A fire broke out in a house in Appleby Magna this morning (Wednesday) due to an accidentally discarded cigarette.

Crews from Ashby, Coalville and Burton were called out to the blaze in Steeple View Lane shortly after 3.30am.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service say that the fire broke out in the bedroom of the property and firefighters needed breathing apparatus to put it out.

But they added that there was severe smoke damage to the first floor.

The blaze, which was reported at 3.42am, was put out by 5.20.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service posted details on their website this morning.

It reads: "Dwelling fire, Appleby Magna.

"Damage: bedroom slight fire damage, severe smoke damage to first floor.

"Believed Cause: Accidental by discarded cigarette.

"Initial Information: fire in bedroom.

"Updated Incident Information: first floor bedroom of dwelling involved in fire, 1 hose reel and 2 Breathing Apparatus used, utilities isolated by fire crews."
