A byway which has been repeatedly damaged by 'off-roaders' has now been closed to all vehicles, horses, pedestrians and cyclists for at least six months.

A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order is in place shutting the byway between Spring Lane, Packington, Ashby Road, Ravenstone and School Lane in Normanton Le Heath in order for repairs to be carried out.

North West Leicestershire Police say it follows a series of issues going back several years.

These have been caused by off roaders with extensive damage to the lane and nearby farmers' fields, fencing and crops with rubbish left in fields.

This has mean serious risk of injury to pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists and walkers who also use the lane.

The rural policing team based at Coalville has been working with Leicestershire County Council, the Green Lane Association, the Trail Riders Federation and the British Horse Society to resolve the problem and are urging everyone to respect and abide by the closure.

Work to repair the road is now under way.
