Plans to close a key Ashby town centre route for six days have been predicted to cause 'chaos'.

Kilwardby Street is set to be shut from its junction with Bath Street to the Co-op car park exit during April.

Leicestershire County Council says this is to Pivotal Energy/Engergetics to work on 'new connections'.

The work, from April 12, will also involve Severn Trent Water.

The County Council says: "A temporary traffic regulation order is to be made for the following location: Kilwardby Street, Ashby de la Zouch, between Bath Street and Co-op car park exit.

"The purpose of the order is to allow Pivotal Energy/Energetics to safely facilitate new connections. Severn Trent Water will be working collaboratively with Pivotal Energy to facilitate new water connections.

"The order will incorporate temporary road closure.

"The duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of six days commencing on April 12."

Details were presented at Monday's meeting of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's planning committee.

But Cllr Carl Benfield said: "That will cause chaos, it's bad enough in Kilwardby Street on a normal day.

"Perhaps something could done, night hours possibly? There's no sensible diversion there."

But it was made clear that the Town Council would put notices up on social media well in advance to prepare people for the closure.

• There will also be a one day road closure in South Street and Lower Church Street on March 30.

That will be followed by works continuing on March 31 with lane restrictions.

This will be to allow National Grid Electricity Distribution to fit new connections.
