A total of five Christmas trees have been stolen from Ashby town centre over the past week - in what has been described as 'mindless' thefts.

The latest incident happened in Mill Lane Mews last night (Sunday) when a woman climbed on to a man's shoulders to remove two trees from shop fronts.

Now, Ashby de la Zouch Town Council has issued an appeal for information about the thefts - with another three stolen the previous weekend, just days after they were put on display.

It is hoped that a review of CCTV can help identify the thieves.

A number of trees have been placed above shops in the town - supposedly out of reach to the public.

But the council has clearly been shocked by the efforts people will go to - especially in Mill Lane Mews - to steal a tree.

A statement from the town council reads: "Public Appeal for information.

"On Sunday, November 26, around 6 – 7pm we had two Christmas Trees stolen from Mill lane Mews.

"A male with a female on his shoulders were seen removing the trees.

"CCTV will be reviewed to determine if these individuals can be identified.

"We would like the trees to be returned to the shops.

"In addition a further three trees were stolen last week during the installation.

"This is very frustrating and upsetting to have this mindless crime happening in our community.

"If you have any information please contact Leicestershire Police."
