Ashby's pubs are remaining open at the moment despite Government advice that they should close during the Coronavirus outbreak and the public should avoid using them.

And at least one plans to open all week and has a band booked in for the weekend.

The Bull's Head, The White Hart and The Lamb on Market Street are open at the moment but will not be commenting on the situation regarding Covid-19.

The Blue Bell, Wetherspoon and the Bowling Green all opened on Tuesday evening.

JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin has described the Government's advice to stay away from pubs and other venues over the coronavirus pandemic as a "tactical error."

"The difference in keeping the hospitality industry open, even with reduced sales, is colossal," said Martin,

But The Plough on The Green not only say they will be staying open for business but, on Saturday night will have a live band on Firewater, a covers group. Fire Water

Ashby Nub News has contacted Marston's who own the White Hart, for further comment on the situation.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Monday that every person in the UK should avoid pubs, clubs and theatres, and cease all 'non-essential' contact with others.

Boris Johnson said it was now necessary to take "drastic action" to combat the "fast growth"of the disease What Ashby Needs To Know

  • McDonald's in Ashby, situated at Lountside, just off the A42, will close its seating areas on Wednesday.

The famous fast-food outlet will become a takeaway, drive-thru and delivery operation only as the company attempts to cope with the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement, chief executive Paul Pomroy said: "Our restaurants will remain open for as long as it is safe to do so.

"In the last 24 hours it has become clear that we need to temporarily change our operations to ensure the wellbeing of our employees and customers consistent with the Government's guidance on social distancing.

"Therefore from 5am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning all restaurants will close seating areas and temporarily move to being takeaway, drive-thru and McDelivery only."

All restaurants will scrap dine-in operations, shut seating and close children's play areas, but toilets will remain open.

He added that all orders placed through Uber Eats and Just Eat would be "contact-free, with no physical contact between customers, employees and couriers, wherever possible".

A spokesman said: "The wellbeing of our employees, customers and suppliers remains of the greatest importance to us and these changes are designed with you all in mind.

"We have not taken this decision lightly and will continue to review this over the coming days."

  • Tesco in Ashby will not be open for 24 hours - but this is seen as a temporary measure.

From Wednesday, the store will open from 6am-10pm in a bid to help replenish stocks after days of panic buying.

Their shelves were noticeably short of stock on Tuesday evening.

The move will be across all extra, superstores and large metro branches.

A few large stores with pharmacies will continue to stay open past 10pm.

Supermarkets have been deluged by shoppers as the coronavirus continues to spread across the UK.

There are almost 4,000 Tesco branches in the UK - but around 400 branches currently open 24 hours a day.
