Ashby de la Zouch Town Council has called for the removal of cricket screens at Western Park claiming they are a serious danger to passers-by.

Cllr Dr Barbara Kneale raised the issue, at Monday's meeting of the Parks and Cemetery Committee meeting, after one of them toppled over in the recent bad weather.

She said that it was an incident that could have been far worse than it was.

"Unfortunately, due to the recent weather, one fell over and I have raised concerns on several occasions about the health and safety issues," said Cllr Kneale.

"We were lucky it fell on to a post and not somebody who was walking by.

"They wobble around and if someone had been walking past at the time it would've been very serious.

"This is a very busy park where people go to walk their dogs. The club have been asked to remove these screens, and if the owner hasn't, we can take them away under fly-tipping.

"Maybe it's time to send a more formal letter to the cricket club and say to them that if they don't remove them by a certain date then we will take them away. I would imagine they're scrap value."

Town Clerk Jack Fargher explained: "I have requested they be removed on a number of occasions in the past. It might be helpful for me to have another look at this issue.

"The previous regime did move them to a less well-used part of the park, but we didn't get much further."

Cllr Kneale Added: "If they're not their screens we're within the law to remove them. It would be nice to get them out of the way for the summer."
