The campaign to re-open a railway line running through Coalville has received the backing of a newly elected MP.

Burton on Trent MP Kate Griffiths says she will be supporting a move to get passenger trains running once more on the Ivanhoe Line.

The route could link Burton with Church Gresley, Moira, Ashby, Coalville and Leicester with new stations along the line.

Support for the Campaign to Re-Open the Ivanhoe Line is gaining ground and a feasibility study to see if the plans can be achieved, is currently in its preliminary stages.

But Mrs Griffiths says she is not opposed to the idea if it is seen to be achievable - and joined other MPs from the region in backing the plans.

"I support the reopening of the Ivanhoe line if a feasibility study demonstrates it is a sustainable option," she told Derbyshire Live.

"It would be of real benefit to local people to have another way of crossing the river and I would like to increase sustainable travel options for people wanting to get in and out of Burton."

CRIL are holding talks with local authorities across North West Leicestershire and South Derbyshire.

And online giant Amazon, based just outside of Coalville, have shown an interest in the benefits a new passenger line could bring them.

The route was originally axed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching cuts but CRIL says re-launching the line would bring a number of benefits to a rapidly expanding area of the country.
