Measures to deter possible anti-social behaviour at the new Money Hill car park in Ashby will not be put in place until the area is up and running.

The 150-space car park is due to open this summer and is set to serve Ashby town centre.

But a previous meeting of Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's planning committee had raised the prospect of the park being used for anti-social behaviour - including car meets.

Cllr Murrae Blair-Park pointed out that ASB had been reduced at the Tesco Car Park after the introduction of speed bumps and fines for parking there at night-time.

But he expressed concerns that the Money Hill site could now take its place.

Cllr Blair-Park asked for a response from North West Leicestershire District Council, who will be fitting the car park out with pay machines, whether similar deterrents could be included at Money Hill.

But the District Council said that the priority was to get the car park opened in the first instance.

It also suggested the prospect of CCTV cameras being installed may be affected by the close proximity of residential houses to the car park.

Monday's planning committee was presented with the District Council's communication.

It included: "The focus now is to get the parking orders in place and open this car park as soon as possible, relieving the pressures on parking demand and by getting the layout fit for purpose by implementing the correct signs and lines, pay by phone technology, as with any other car park in the council's portfolio.

"There will be the opportunity to review this once the car park has been given time to operate and to see whether the speed bumps and CCTV are necessary considering the number of houses that surround this residential car parking space, the laws associated with CCTV and how damaging speed bumps can bthe vehicles regularly using the car park, instead of a deterrent to anti-social behaviour often more appropriate in town centre locations."
