The Ashby Woulds pub in Moira has been saved from closure after local musicians staged a fundraising weekend.

Last month we reported how landlord Tom Mcgurk had posted a message on Facebook saying that the Norris Hill-based venue was closing.

But the pub also stages an open mic night and those musicians got together re-open the Woulds for a two-day fundraiser which was attended by a host of bands and singers.

The event raised £1,500 which was put towards the costs of re-opening the pub.

It means it is not only open for business once more but the open mic nights and community group meetings have also started again.

Darren Wileman, who took part in the fundraising event with his band The Houseclowns, said: "The weekend was a huge success and a well worthwhile adventure."

Many of the pub's regulars believe Tom has made the Ashby Woulds a community meeting place in the area and that if he had been forced to leave then another landlord may have had different plans for it.

There was also the fear that the pub could lie empty for years if it closed.
