Ashby Town Councillor Murrae Blair-Park has called on housing developers, police and the county and district councils to tackle dangerous and anti-social driving in Ashby.
Cllr Blair-Park, who is councillor for the Money Hill ward, has written to authorities and developers to 'raise a serious concern about ongoing nuisance and safety issues cause by cars cruising and driving anti-socially along the A511 between the Tesco roundabout and the Smisby roundabout in Ashby-de-la-Zouch.'
He also raised concerns over the misuse of the newly created slip road into the Money Hill development, which, he claims, is 'being used by some drivers to perform "doughnuts" and other reckless driving manoeuvres.'
According to Cllr Blair-Park, 'In the evenings, especially later at night, groups of drivers are repeatedly using this stretch of road to speed, rev engines and carry out dangerous manoeuvres.
'Local residents are experiencing persistent noise, disturbance and antisocial behaviour as a result.'
In his letter, he says this behaviour has created a genuine road safety risk and serious danger to pedestrians. Residents are concerned, he says, that a speeding or out-of-control vehicle could leave the carriageway and cause injury or worse to people using the adjacent footpath, as well as to other road users.
He is calling on the developers, Taylor Wimpey and Bloor homes, to move the site fencing further up the slip road to restrict vehicle access to the area, saying that, to his knowledge, the houses that would be accessed by the slip road are not yet occupied so there is so need for the slip road to be accessed by drivers at this time.
He has also asked developers to install temporary CCTV to act as a deterrent to drivers using the slip road for anti-social driving.
He has called on Leicestershire County Council and North West Leicestershire District Council to carry out an urgent assessment of road and safety along the specified section of the A511 and the new slip road, as well as for them to work with developers and police to ensure the management of the Money Hill access roads to not facilitate anti-social driving.
Finally, he has called on local police to continue to, and in possible to increase, patrols and enforcement in the known peak times in the evening and use any relevant powers to enforce this.
Ashby Nub News will continue to report on the outcome of this letter and how the developers, authorities and police respond to his letter.
