Ashby's Town Centre manager has urged businesses to 'see the potential' in taking over HSBC Bank building in Market Street.

The bank announced yesterday (Tuesday) that it was shutting its Ashby branch as part of 69 closures across the UK.

It is expected to close on August 25, leaving another gap to be filled in the town centre,

Now Stuart Benson, the Town Centre manager at Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, says he hopes the 'iconic' building can be taken over as soon as possible.

He told Ashby Nub News: "This is certainly a big blow for the town.

"It will be interesting to see what kind of new business could potentially occupy the building in the future.

"I'm sure the building will come with a high premium when it's made available.

"But it's an iconic building right in the centre of the town that we do not want to see empty."

It is not certain if HSBC own the building or are renting it.

Stuart added: "Maybe this will be something the Ashby BID (Business Improvement District) will look at to gather interest in filling from possibly another national company or someone looking to expand.

"We must do all we can to ensure Ashby remains a healthy and vibrant town centre that caters for all its residents.

"Now is the time to secure the town's future to ensure we give people a reason to visit and shop in Ashby instead of going elsewhere.

"I do hope that someone can see the potential in the building and a deal can be reached to fill it quickly."
