Three men were arrested and a woman taken to hospital after a fight in Ashby town centre yesterday evening.

One man was held in custody overnight following the incident in Market Street just after 4pm.

Leicestershire Police reported that two men were 'fighting in the street' and that a woman was pushed to the ground during that incident,

The police say they are still investigating what led up to the confrontation between the men which took place close to the pelican crossing at the junction with Brook Street.

But witnesses and social media posts referred to it as being a case of 'road rage' and that the woman was 'elderly'.

Police have not confirmed this, but made it clear that the woman's injuries were not as a result of a traffic accident.

She was treated at the scene by East Midlands Ambulance Service.

A third man was later arrested for assaulting a police officer attending the incident.

Police cordoned the area off to traffic and pedestrians last night until around 9pm.

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Police told Ashby Nub News: "Police received a call at around 4.15pm yesterday (7 December) of a report of two men fighting in the street on Market Street, Ashby.

"It was also reported a woman was pushed to the ground during the incident.

"Officers attended and two men aged 29 and 54 were arrested on suspicion of affray.

"The 29-year-old has been released under investigation while the 54-year-old man remains in police custody.

The woman was assessed by EMAS at the scene and taken to hospital.

"Her injuries were not deemed to be life changing or life threatening.

"Another man aged 27 was also arrested for assaulting an emergency worker after an officer responding to the incident was pushed.

"He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

"Enquiries are continuing into the incident."
