Ashby Sport Fun Day returns to the Bath Grounds this Sunday with the annual event aiming to unite the town's sports clubs - and get local youngsters active.

Ashby Sport was set up two years ago with a view to bringing the area's sports organisations together to work as one, rather than being separate.

The event was adopted by Ashby de la Zouch Town Council and added to the events calendar.

It is also a chance for you to get involved and 'have a go'.

Whether it be rugby union or boxing, hockey or archery, bowls or cycling, there is something to suit everyone.

It has grown each year and one of Ashby Sport's founders Kenny Horn says Sunday will be no exception.

Kenny said: "Ashby Sport now comprises of 40 clubs, this year there's a record number of clubs taking part in the Fun Day.

"There'll also be some new sports as well. Karate, archery and sailing - with Staunton Harold Sailing Club - we'll be using simulators for that obviously, but it's worth coming along to see how that works."

Kenny says the event has grown in popularity since making its debut in Ashby.

He added: "Last year, we reckoned there was probably about 3,500 people who came along to the Bath Grounds.

"I found that staggering and we'd love to see as many people there again this time.

"But it's really important it remains a free event which is why it's vital that we have sponsorship.

"This year we have Vitalize Physiotherapy, who have sponsored the whole event, they are based at Bluestone Fitness on Smisby Road.

"They've been very supportive along with Kangaroo Digital Marketing.

"As a result we have Vitalise Arena, where we'll have participation events for kids and adults such as spacehoppers, bean bag racing and wellie wanging again.

"The arena idea is good because it gives people like Fitness Republic to get involved with things like tug-o-war, but it meant the public could get engaged with the activities.

"For me, that's what's most pleasing about Ashby Sport, it's there to encourage and does exactly that. It's really important and I'm pleased with how it's come about. We pray for good weather of course."
