Ashby School Head Says Students Are Now Receiving Grades Which 'More Fairly Reflect Their Ability'

Ashby School headteacher Geoff Staniforth says his A-Level students are now receiving fairer grades following this week's re-assessment.

The computer-based Ofqual algorithm calculated marks left many school-leavers with lower than expected grades.

But a much talked about U-turn was implemented this week.

Students received centre assessment grades for this week's GCSE results and last week's A-Level results, the Government and Ofqual have confirmed on Monday.

Following the latest decision to use centre assessed grades, Mr Staniforth said: "Any statistical model if rigorously applied with limited flexibility was inevitably going to affect individuals either positively or negatively.

"By moving to the centre assessed grades, which are based on evidence from the students' work over the two years, the grades they are now receiving more fairly reflect their ability."

The Gov.UK site says: "Ofqual had consulted on and implemented a standardisation process for exam results this summer, but the system resulted in too many inconsistent and unfair outcomes for A-Level students.

"Over the last few days, it has become clear that the algorithm has revealed a number of anomalies that had not been anticipated by Ofqual and which severely undermined confidence in the system.

"Subsequently, the Government and Ofqual have jointly agreed to revert to centre assessment grades, which are the grades which schools and colleges assessed students were most likely to have achieved, had exams gone ahead.

"This was deemed to be the fairest approach to avoid some students receiving grades that did not reflect their prior performance."

But when the A-Level results came out last week, Mr Staniforth felt that a number of students from Ashby School would still be able to go to university.

He said at the time: "At this stage in the process, we are focusing on supporting our students with the next steps in their career.

"We are delighted to say that the majority of students have successfully been offered a place at university."
