The Ashby and District Royal British Legion has announced its Annual Poppy Appeal raised more than £54,000 last year.

It is a figure that is almost £20,000 up on the previous year's total of £36,000.

The appeal was launched in Ashby in October with two bagpipers in full regalia - which helped to raise its profile.

That featured local councillor Kenny Horn and piper Michael Gordon. in Market Street.

With this year marking the 80th anniversary VE Day, Ashby branch chairman Dan Harrison said that the money raised demonstrated that the local community is truly behind the initiative of the Poppy Appeal and he thanked all of the individuals who unselfishly gave their time to assist.

He also thanked Ashby de la Zouch Town Council officers and staff for their support and contribution in making this annual event so successful after a concerted effort to make people aware of the Poppy Appeal locally.

Chairman Cllr Dan Harrison is seen here in the garden at the Ashby War Memorial with committee members Brian Senton, Graham Allman and three times former Mayoress Charmaigne Allman.
