Ashby restaurant Calypso has had a fresh start, with new management introducing a fresh menu, new chefs and positive reviews from guests.

Calypso in Ashby, which opened on 22 October, had a rough opening few months in the town, receiving a mixed bag of reviews, often critical of the food and atmosphere.

One review from 13 December, before the management refresh, said: 'The food was bland, not a Caribbean seasoning in sight. [...] The Caribbean theme begins and ends with the murals on the wall.'

There were also complaints about difficulty in booking a table there, with no website or clear way of contacting the restaurant.

However, the restaurant has been under new management since 5 January, with a brand new menu, chefs and an initial improvement in reviews.

The new menu format has stayed the same, offering separate English and Caribbean menu. Options on the updated menu include the following on the English menu:

• Beer battered cod served with thick cut chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce,
• Chicken supreme served with creamy mash, carrots, broccoli and mushroom sauce,
• Halloumi and sweet potato burger with chillies, smashed avocado and mint yoghurt, served with fries,

The Caribbean menu includes the following:

• On-the-bone jerk chicken,
• Ackee and Callaloo
• Goat curry
• Jerk salmon fillet

The reviews for the new menu have started to come in and they are a definite improvement, including this recent TripAdvisor review: 'Refreshed management and menu, WOW! It was good before but not it's so so much better, far better menu choices and top quality from start to finish, definitely give it a go, you won't be disappointed.'

The new menu has more options, better variety and a great mix of both English and Caribbean meals and, speaking to new manager Amber, has big plans for the future.

Calypso is definitely one to watch.
