The community of Ashby has generously supported Ashby Rotary by donating £662 to the clubs' campaign to help the eradication of polio worldwide.

Twenty Rotarians from the three Ashby clubs turned out on a wet and windy Saturday last month to man collecting points in Market Street and at the Tesco Extra store.

Paul Cook, President of the Rotary Club of Ashby de la Zouch, said: "We were pleasantly surprised with the amount of money we collected in view of the poor weather on the day.

"But perhaps we shouldn't be surprised, as people in Ashby have always supported whatever Rotary does."

The money will be forwarded to the Rotary International Polio Fund to assist its efforts in conjunction with the World Health Organisation to eradicate the disease throughout the world.
