The team at an Ashby opticians have raised £112 for the Childhood Tumour Trust - after being inspired by one their own store managers.

Specsavers in Market Street held a 'Name the teddy bear competition' in store.

They asked customers for a donation to the charity, which provides help and support for children with Neurofibromatosis (NF1) and their families, in return for guessing the name of the cuddly toy.

The winner was Lucy Prew who correctly picked William as the bear's name.

"We decided to fundraise for the Childhood Tumour Trust and NF1 because one of our store managers, Becca Ward-Rotherham, was diagnosed with the disease at birth," said Kuljinder Bains, store director at Specsavers Ashby.

"It's been a while since we've been able to do any fundraising, so for this to be in support of one of the team was a great way to kick things off again."

Becca added: "I'm pretty lucky in that my NF1 is manageable, and while it was a bit more challenging when I was younger, it's something that I try to not let it affect me too much.

"Years ago there wasn't the funding or research available, but thanks to charities like the Childhood Tumour Trust, things have improved.

"The disease can be much more severe, with complications including tumours and bone deformities and I'm delighted that the team chose to support the charity.'

In line with NHS recommendations, Specsavers colleagues use personal protective equipment (PPE) throughout the stores, wear face masks and other PPE during tests, and all testing equipment and frames are thoroughly sanitised before and after each use.

All appointments need to be made in advance and there are also be restrictions on the number of customers allowed in store at any one time, strict social distancing rules and, where possible, card instead of cash payments.
