Ashby Nursery children show a random act of kindness as flowers are handed out in town centre

If you were handed a bunch of daffodils around Ashby town centre earlier this week, it was done for a reason.

It was the idea of Ashby Day Nursery in North Street, and their pre-school three to four year olds who wanted to bring a 'random act of kindness' to the area on a Monday morning.

Deputy Manager Kerry Nettel explained it was something the children were keen to get involved in.

Kerry told Ashby Nub News: "Our topic this week was random acts of kindness. In the current climate at the moment there's not a lot to get excited about.

"So we decided we would teach the children about being kind. What kind means. So we wanted to give out some daffodils.

"We talked about how our mummies or daddies and grandparents like to receive flowers. And it makes them happy.

"We got some daffodils, the children made a label and drew a picture. And then we went to hand them out around town.

"We spoke to the children about how it's nice to give other people gifts. But we also remembered stranger danger at the same time.

"We still need to stay safe."

Kerry said the gesture also came with a donation as a result of buying the flowers.

She added" "We were discussing what would make our families really happy and what makes. So we decided to go with some flowers.

"We got them from Tesco, when you buy them from there they are giving a proportion of the money to Macmillan Cancer Support. So we were helping them at the same time.

"I took the flowers out and about, we can't do it with the children because of restrictions at the moment.

"I took them here there and everywhere in the town centre, I handed them to some people. Some of them were wondering what was going on, but it did put a smile on their faces.

"One gentleman said to his wife, 'Look at the flowers, it's got a label on it saying be happy. This is really made my day thank you very much'.

"I had the biggest smile on my face doing it, Maybe people thought I was a bit deranged!

"It was all really lovely. Anything to cheer a Monday up."

The children were pre-school and Kerry said it has been heartwarming to hear their contributions.

She said: "The children were three and four years old, it's been really lovely to get the ideas from the children.

"They also wanted to draw pictures for the local care homes, some of them have grandparents there and haven't seen them a a little while, so that is our next plan."
