Ashby Library proposed as potential new site for banking hub
By Chris Harper - Local Democracy Reporting Service 1st Apr 2026
A new Leicestershire banking hub could be housed within a town's library according to proposals.
Leicestershire County Council, along with North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC), is considering plans to bring a long-awaited community banking hub to Ashby Library on North Street.
The banking hub consists of Post Office employees, where customers can withdraw and deposit cash, including making payments for bills and other services.
Link, the UK's cash access network, recommended that a banking hub be established in the town after NatWest's Market Street branch closed on September 18 last year.
Cash Access UK, which plans to deliver the hub, said it is expected to open in June 2026, and Ashby Library could be its home.
Pre-application advice has been submitted by the county council to NWDLC about turning a meeting room into the planned banking hub temporarily.
A spokesperson for Leicestershire County Council confirmed that it was "working through the details of the proposal with Cash Access" ahead of the planned June opening.
Paul Wheatley, head of property and regeneration at NWLDC, said: "We are supportive of accessible banking services being provided in all of our major urban areas.
"If that requires innovation in terms of the buildings used to house the banking hubs then that is fine. The most important thing is that the community continues to have access to banking services."
Cash Access UK has been contacted for comment.
