Ashby Ivanhoe's FA Cup dreams brought to an end despite brave display against higher ranked side
Ashby Ivanhoe 0 Bromsgrove Sporting 2
Quality in the final third meant that Step 3 side Bromsgrove Sporting prevailed at the NFU as a spirited Ashby performance saw their FA Cup journey come to an end.
In the game's major talking point, Prince Henry, scorer of Sporting's second goal was required to don the gloves for the final 20 minutes when goalkeeper Ollie Taylor caught a looping back pass inside his six-yard box.
In an even first half, Ivanhoe had the greater chances as Sam Grouse came close with an effort from distance and Tolani Omotola forced a strong save from Taylor when he burst through on goal, shrugging of two defenders in the process.
In a similar passage of play, Omotola was seemingly fouled by a Sporting defender while rushing in on goal, however the striker attempted to stay on his feet and therefore the referee chose not to award a foul.
''Without a shadow of a doubt Tol was fouled, maybe he should have gone down but the referee should have picked it up regardless'' said manager Andy Gray.
His team were punished for their missed chances as Sporting won themselves a penalty at the other end. Miro Pais' quick feet caught out Jake Conkay who brought him down marginally inside the box.
Conor Tee stepped up and fired his penalty to Sam Taylor's right, clinically giving the visitors the lead after half an hour.
Despite being a goal down, Ivanhoe refused to relent and began the second half strongly and had a second penalty appeal waved away when Grouse attempted to flick the ball past a defender who appeared to block the ball with his arm.
There was little doubt from Grouse and Ivanhoe's fans behind the goal that the ball had struck the arm, however the ball being played from point blank range saved the Bromsgrove man on this occasion.
They were punished further moments later when Sporting doubled their lead as Ben O'Hanlon's cross picked out Henry who found a pocket of space and headed in from close range.
Henry's afternoon got more interesting ten minutes later when he took over in goal following Taylor's red card. There was initial confusion as the referee conferred with his assistant, eventually deciding that catching the back pass was the only way that a goal could have been prevented.
The subsequent indirect free kick brought about more appeals for handball, however this incident was far less clear than the earlier incident due to the crowded six-yard box.
Henry did admirably in his stint with the gloves, convincingly claiming the ball on several occasions.
Ashby however would have been disappointed that they were unable to force him into any saves with Sporting pressing quickly to stop efforts from range.
The defeat makes it three on the bounce for Ivanhoe, but they can walk away from this one with their heads held high.
Gray's team more than competed with a team two leagues above and could have earned a replay on another day.
