Ashby councillors reject Flagstaff Island works site plans again after fresh application is made for 'hideous' development
Plans to build a works site next door to a hotel and restaurant have again been rejected by Ashby de la Zouch Town Council - after being described as 'hideous' and 'a disaster'.
The road related storage, maintenance, management facility and associated site works at Lountside, close to the A42 junction, had already been given outline planning permission.
But it was thrown out by North West Leicestershire District Council in November, who said it was out of character with the surrounding area.
The applicant, Eurogarages, has appealed that decision, but submitted a fresh application in the meantime.
Again, that met with the same objections at Monday''s meeting of Ashby Town Council's planning committee.
Previously, councillors had pointed out that such a depot would detract from the Premier Inn hotel and Whitbread-owned Brewers Fayre restaurant.
Both are adjacent to the planned scheme, along with a branch of McDonald's and an Esso petrol station which contains an Asda mini-supermarket.
A member of the public told councillors on Monday that the proposal would see a 'hideous building' being built.
He said that the site already had traffic concerns, and this scheme would see lorries queuing back on the A42 as it would be too small and the applicants 'hadn't done their sums'.
It was also claimed there would be '24 hour work' and no noise assessment has been addressed.
He added: "It's a disaster and needs to be stopped."
The committee agreed and strongly objected to the revised plans for the reasons they had done last year.
The application, in one form or another, has now been rejected four times by councillors on the grounds of noise and disturbance, hazardous materials and highway issues.
