Plans to lose 17 car parking spaces at the planned new Central England Co-op store in Market Street have raised objections from Ashby de la Zouch Town Council.

Councillors had expected more parking to be created - instead the proposed scheme would lose spaces.

The plans would see the Co-op move from their current site at the other end of Market Street - and occupy the building which was vacated by New Look during lockdown.

The Co-op owns the building and initial plans received no objections when they came before the Town Council's planning committee in July Co-op store plans given the green light.

However, at the time, the committee heard that car parking plans would need to be 'tweaked' and that a further application would be submitted - with an extra four car parking spaces created.

But Monday's planning committee meeting heard that the plans would now mean the loss of 17 car parking places in South Street.

The committee has objected on the grounds of highway safety.

The council says the amount of places currently available should at least be maintained, and, if possible, increased.
