Ashby town and district councillor Kenny Horn has put forward a case for keeping the museum in North Street - after a proposal to cut its £1,500 grant.
Cllr Horn says he met with district councillors this morning (Thursday) to highlight how important Ashby Museum is to the community.
Last week's meeting of North West Leicestershire District Council's Corporate Scrutiny committee saw Ashby's Labour councillors Dave Bigby, Alison Morley and Murrae Blair-Park speak out against the planned withdrawal of the funding.
Now Conservative councillor Horn says he has also said the proposal should be reconsidered - and says Ashby is 'punching below its weight'.
Cllr Horn told Ashby Nub News: "I met with Cabinet colleagues this morning to discuss the proposed withdrawal of the grant to Ashby Museum due to budget constraints.
"I emphasised the importance of this grant to the Museum and the role it plays in the wider Ashby Community.
"I'm hopeful the decision to withdraw the grant will be reconsidered.
"However, Ashby Town and District Councillors must start to think about the bigger picture.
"For too long Ashby has been punching well below its weight compared to other towns across the district.
"Whilst councils are under pressure to manage finances carefully, there is money available for the right projects.
"Ashby is in need of investment in a number of areas and therefore I encourage all Town and District Ashby Councillors to work more closely to deliver the inward investment Ashby deserves.
"Further, I met with countless local people in campaign with expertise, specialisms, talent and ambition to make a real difference to the Ashby community.
"Once again, I would encourage Town and District Councillors to reach out to this valuable volunteer resource."
