The new Ashby Co-op site development in Market Street is set to go ahead despite calls to re-consider the loss of 17 car parking spaces.

Ashby de la Zouch Town Council has objected to the loss of car parking on South Street as a result of Central England Co-op moving in to the former New Look building.

Councillors have constantly voiced their concerns about the further loss of car parking space - particularly with the loss of the Royal Hotel car park which currently cannot be accessed.

Now, Central England Co-op has put fresh plans to North West Leicestershire District Council who will now consider whether to grant planning permission.

The Co-op's new plans appear to have addressed an issue with external lighting but it is understood no mention has been made of the reduced car parking space.

It is also understood that an Ashby town councillor tried to 'call in' the application - which meant it could have been debated at a district council planning committee - but was told it was too late.

Now the application is set to be decided by council officers in Coalville.

The Co-op plans to vacate its current site at the other end of Market Street to take over the New Look building.

Many Ashby residents have expressed surprise that the new store is so close to the Derby Road Co-op.

But they are operated by different companies.
