Ashby Civic Society has registered its objections to the proposed new Lidl store in Resolution Road.

It says the move is 'foolish' and would cause 'traffic paralysis' in the already congested Nottingham Road area.

Last week, Ashby de la Zouch Town Council's planning committee listed a number of objections to the supermarket scheme, which would be built on the Ashfield House site once the current building is demolished.

The national budget store would be built in an area which already has four similar outlets - two of them, Tesco and Aldi, close to where Lidl is being planned.

The Civic Society has now noted its objections on the North West Leicestershire District Council planning website.

It reads: "Ashby Civic Society wishes to object to this application.

"We object to the store as we believe it will cause a great increase in traffic in an already congested area of Ashby.

"The traffic queues are currently very long on Nottingham Road in both directions. To add this problem would be foolish and result in traffic paralysis on the north part of our town.

"The design advertised and shown to the public as part of Lidl's initial consultation is completely different from the actual building design in the application. Why is this? There is another storey on top of the shop that was not there before.

"The need for more trees in the National Forest is well known, yet Lidl's design shows trees to the frontage being removed.

"We wish that the scheme adopted across the road on the Marks & Spencer and B&M shops should be adopted here, i.e. more trees around the store to make it more attractive feature than a plain, ugly black block.

"The two shops across the road also adopted a wood cladding scheme to soften the impact of the stock buildings. Should this not happen here also?

"The design of these 'sheds,' add nothing to landscape, and does not reflect the interesting and historic buildings of our town."
