Ashby Civic Society has announced its new programme of talks and outside visits for the new season beginning in September.

The talks are held at St Helen's Heritage Centre and begin at 7.30pm on a Tuesday.

Next Tuesday (Sept 10) the Society has Bill Devitt with his story of the re-opening of the Orient Express. The talk is entitled 'The Orient Express – King of Trains and Train of Kings' - it is described as a fascinating tale and not to be missed.

Other talks coming up include 'Ghosts of Calke Abbey and Warwick Castle' by Jo Golby and 'Arming A Knight' by Jed Jaggard.

There will also be a Christmas Social Event at Ashby Golf Club and several outside visits next summer.

At each talk, a few minutes are given over to discussing current civic matters.

At the moment much attention is being paid to the plans for the second phase of the Money Hill development.

The society says it is 'most concerned' that provision has not been paid to the effect that a huge increase in traffic created by the extra 4,000 inhabitants will make on the already busy roads into the town.

A society spokesperson said: "We are encouraging our members and the public to respond to the recent consultation held by the builders, Bloor and Taylor Wimpey.

"We are looking forward to meeting old and new members at our next meeting. To find out more details see our website HERE or simply turn up at our next meeting."
