The manager of Wong Kwei Chinese restaurant in Ashby has hit out at the 'damage for the sake of damage' vandalism that saw the window of their front door smashed overnight.

A man is alleged to have hit the window, causing it to break, before walking away 'as if he had just scored a goal'.

There was no attempt at a break in at a restaurant which has been feeling the pinch during lockdown and is now accepting collections with contact payments.

The manager Steve Bilton said it was the last thing they need after a difficult spell for the restaurant industry.

But although the incident was reported to police, they cannot do anything about it as the man's face was not caught on Wong Kwei's CCTV, even though the crime was.

Mr Bilton told Ashby Nub News: "The glass front door was smashed through, we don't have CCTV of his face but we know what he was wearing and which direction he was going in.

"What happened was, he just walked past, stuck his elbow through the window pane and when it smashed, he's walked off with his arms in the air like he's just scored a goal.

"It wasn't a break in, it was criminal vandalism which is worse in some ways. Damage for the sake of damage.

"The police immediately closed the case as there's no witnesses. If we can get a clear picture of him then they'll re-open it.

"He was on his own and walked from Bath Street to Kilwardby Street, I wonder if the Shoulder of Mutton's camera picked him up.

'We got Abbey Glass in to repair it but they will kindly make sure we're secure by Tuesday night."

Steve confirmed the restaurant's current position during lockdown and the possibility of opening again once the social distancing is reduced to one metre.

He added: "We're doing deliveries and we have started doing contactless payment collections, there's a routine to it, but on July 4, we hope to open.

"It's been a struggle, we've still got overheads to pay. We're ticking over but we desperately need the restaurant to open."
