Two photos of an injured female police officer - following an incident in Ashby four years ago - have been widely shared on social media with false claims they are connected to an incident at Manchester Airport on Tuesday.

The posts, which are circulating on X - formerly Twitter - Facebook and Instagram, use two images of the same woman, with one caption on Facebook saying: 'Truth behind Manchester Airport incident.

It was an injury that resulted in her having 17 internal and external stitches.

But the Full Fact website reports that social media users have highlighted the current false use of the photos.

They are being used to suggest the images are from an altercation at Manchester Airport which has led to an officer being suspended.

The photos show bruising to her eyes and a serious cut on her nose - the other a pixelated image of her bloody nose.

Text within another image widely circulated says: "This is what happened to the Female Police Officer at Manchester Airport."

The Ashby incident came after she was punched when she placed a handcuff on one wrist of a boy who was 16 at the time and being detained by other officers.

Reuters quotes a Leicestershire Police spokesperson as saying: "The images show a Leicestershire Police officer following an assault which happened in September 2020.

"The officer pictured, who continues to serve in the Leicestershire force, is not connected to the incident reported at Manchester Airport this week in any way."

In the Ashby incident, a boy received a 12-month community order and was ordered to pay £600 costs.
